Question: What is an economic activity?
Answer: Activities through which money or income is earned are called economic activities. For example – farming, running a shop, doing a job, etc.
Question: Why are economic activities classified?
Answer: Economic activities are classified so that it can be understood how different activities work and how they are connected to each other.
Question: How many main sectors of economic activities are there?
Answer: There are three main sectors of economic activities—
- Primary Sector
- Secondary Sector
- Tertiary Sector
Question: What is the primary sector? Explain with examples.
Answer: Activities in which people directly obtain goods from nature are called the primary sector.
Examples: Agriculture, mining, fishing, animal husbandry, forestry, poultry farming, etc.
Question: What is the secondary sector? Explain with examples.
Answer: Activities in which raw materials obtained from the primary sector are converted into useful goods are called the secondary sector.
Examples: Making flour, making clothes, furniture manufacturing, paper making, production of goods in factories.
Question: What is the tertiary sector? Explain with examples.
Answer: Activities that provide services to the primary and secondary sectors are called the tertiary sector. It is also known as the service sector.
Examples: Transport, banking, education, healthcare, communication, hotels, shops, repair services.
Question: How are the three sectors dependent on each other?
Answer: All three sectors complement each other.
Example (from milk to curd):
- Primary: The farmer supplies milk.
- Secondary: Milk is converted into curd/paneer in the dairy.
- Tertiary: The truck driver delivers curd to the market and the shopkeeper sells it.
Question: How did dairy cooperatives (such as Amul) help farmers?
Answer:
- Freed farmers from middlemen.
- Provided fair prices for milk.
- Collected and processed milk and delivered it to the market.
- Provided employment to women and small farmers.
Question: What is a cooperative organization?
Answer: When people voluntarily work together to fulfill their economic and social needs, it is called a cooperative organization.
Question: What are the benefits of recycling paper?
Answer:
- Reduces cutting of trees.
- Saves energy and water.
- Makes waste disposal easier.
- Protects the environment.
Question: How are all three sectors involved in the process of making paper?
Answer:
- Primary: Obtaining wood from trees.
- Secondary: Making pulp and paper from wood.
- Tertiary: Transporting paper to printing presses, printing books, and selling them.
Question: What will happen if the activity of any one sector stops?
Answer: If one sector stops functioning, it will affect the other sectors as well and economic activities will be disrupted.
